2007 Voyage Weblog > 05/27: Flag Dance (Cherie Shehata)
Today we would leave Hiroshima and sail to Uwa Jima, however on the way we would stop at Oshima overnight for safety reasons. On arrival, the students of their maritime school would perform the flag dance. The flag dance is a way that the students remember the flag signals while sailing. About two rows of six students lined up, while 3 of them hummed the flag dance song. It was pretty funny, but all were proud to get it right. One of the local ships would host us for a nice dinner, with hot steaming curry over rice. The captain of the ship would join us for dinner. Again they gifted us with handcrafted seal for each of the crew members. We would also get a nice bunk on the ship to sleep on that night and a hot shower. A group of us had slept so well that night, and had been hidden in one of the corners of the ship, that we almost did not make it to crew call and departure. Talk about an awakening, we all jumped up out of the bunks, run up on deck and onto the dock, in time for the prayer. Then jumped on Hokule'a and made our may out to Uwa Jima.
