Iona tracking the Hokule'a
We began discussing the Hokule'a and its voyage to Okinawa, Japan a few weeks ago by looking at maps of Oahu, then the Hawaiian Island chain learning the directions of North, South, East, and West. After that we moved on to the larger tracking map of the Pacific Ocean.

Discussing the route of the Hokulea
Last Friday (3/9/07), Makali'i crew member Mr. Mike Manu came into our class for a visit. He came dressed in rain gear that is worn to stay dry, brought in a cooler full of the items taken on a voyage, and taught the children how to read the star patterns and understand swell directions. He shared wonderful photos of Papa Mau, the beautiful islands he was able to visit while sailing, and the voyages he was able to join. Mahalo Uncle Mike for coming and sharing your mana'o with our students!
