what is the navigation debate about?how were the navigational skills lost?

the skills were lost during the westernization of the Pacific in the 19th and 20th century and the replacement of traditional ways of sailing canoes with modern navigational methods and technology and motorized boats. some felt that the old ways were no longer needed; but now there is a revival of those traditional ways as important for the cultural values they embody and teach.
