Introductions > Summary of Paulina’s Talk by Melody Guiormog, Stevenson Middle School student
Paulina came to our class on Tuesday to talk about her voyage. She was chosen to go on the Hokule’a by Nainoa Thompson. Before she went on the voyage, she had to prove herself by swimming a mile. On the voyage she saw many birds and dolphins along the way. Paulina said that while the crew members had work duties, she was able to rest because she got sick.
The two canoes Hokule’a and Maisu traveled to Satawal. The people on the canoes went to visit Mau Piailug. Paulina learned how navigational way finding is done nowadays. On their trip they had enough food and supplies. From Pohnpei to Chuuk it took them about 300 miles. It also took them about 300 miles from Chuuk to Satawal. When they sailed to Chuuk, there was little wind so had to use tugboat for tow. But when they sailed to Satawal, they ran into a squall. Paulina also showed us some pictures from her trip.
