Introductions > Summary of Paulina’s Talk by Jung Won Cho, Stevenson Middle School student

On Tuesday, Paulina came and told us about the 2007 Voyage and Polynesian Voyaging Society. She told us that they undertook the voyage to revive Way Finding. Also they used ripples of the waves against the side of the canoe to find out how fast they traveled in knots. They also used natural resources to navigate. For example, they used clouds, stars, and birds. During the voyage the time took 12 hours to travel between the islands. The weather in Micronesia is warm through the year. They don’t have snow. Also Paulina was afraid of going or sailing on the canoes for the firs time. She was also afraid that she didn’t know anyone in the crew. But soon she got close with the crews. At one point, they were towed by escort boat Kama Hele because of little wind. It was close to a doldrums which means no wind. The crews used propane stove for cooking their food. If you look at the map the left side of Palau is very warm. But at the Japan side, it is very cold. About the information, I liked her because she gave me and the class so much information about the voyage of the Polynesians. Also she showed us pictures of the voyage and her son. Then, she showed us pictures of crew members and her friends.
